Fast Heart Mart’s Vegan Faux-Cream Smoothie

This recipe is adapted from the original recipe invented by San Diego-based singer, songwriter, and banjo player Fast Heart Mart. One late evening at a pizza joint, I asked Fast Heart the question: “With such a picky diet, do you have anything you eat that really satisfies you?”

Laughing, he replied, “Oh, plenty of stuff.”

“Like, do you ever gorge on ice cream as an indulgence, for example?”

“Well, I don’t do a lot of dairy, but I have this great mint smoothie recipe that tastes a lot like ice cream, and sometimes I have that in the morning. It’s like having ice cream for breakfast. I’ve been developing the recipe for some time.”

“It’s your recipe?” I asked.

“Yes. It has a few simple ingredients…”

Alright, the above dialogue is not verbatim but rather what lingers in my memory. This legendary conversation is what introduced me to the following, obscenely delicious, slightly adapted mint smoothie recipe which I have coined Fast Heart Mart’s Vegan Faux Cream Smoothie.

  • 3 c. Almond milk
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1/4 c. dark cacao powder
  • 3 medjool dates, pitted and chopped
  • (heaping) tsp. peanut butter
  • 10 fresh mint leaves, chopped

Add the ingredients to a blender or food processor, one at a time, in that order. Blend to desired consistency, and voila. Add ice if you like. Let me know if this doesn’t taste like heavenly chocolate ice cream.

The banana is not part of Fast Heart Mart’s original smoothie. He uses avocado instead, as a texture thickener. And, rather than peanut butter, he uses peanut butter powder. Additionally, he sometimes swaps the fresh mint for maca powder, a version I have not yet explored but intend to.

I have now shared this smoothie with Sujantra, Shambu, and Jeevan, and they have each rejoiced in it’s life-giving effect. That cacao powder + mint combo will wake you up!

This recipe must be one of the many sources of mojo for the musician. Check out Fast Heart Mart here.

And, smoothie on.
